The Supreme Court of the United States has ruled that a Colorado law banning conversion therapies for LGBT minors violates the right to free speech. This decision was made following a challenge brought by Kaley Chiles, a Christian psychological counselor.
The Colorado law, enacted in 2019, prohibits licensed practitioners from altering the sexual orientation or gender identity of minors, deeming these therapies ineffective and harmful. Judge Neil Gorsuch argued that the law regulates the content of expression and discriminates based on opinion, emphasizing that the First Amendment protects the right to think and speak freely. Only Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson contested the decision, warning that it could affect states' ability to regulate medical professions.
Chiles' attorney hailed the ruling as a victory for free speech, while the UN has called for a global ban on conversion therapies, considering them discriminatory and humiliating.
