Lisa Nandy announced the intention to request regulatory authorities to examine the acquisition of Warner Bros Discovery by Paramount, valued at 110 billion dollars. This transaction would create a media giant, controlling famous studios and channels such as CNN and TNT Sports. Nandy emphasized that she will ask Ofcom to analyze the impact of the merger on media plurality and the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) to investigate competition issues arising from this acquisition.
She also mentioned that existing legislation does not cover the impact of mergers on streaming services, proposing legislative measures to allow investigations in this area. The companies involved have until July 6 to respond, and Nandy stated that she has not made a final decision regarding intervention. Paramount stated that it expects the transaction to be approved without significant delays.
