The UK Parliament’s Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee will examine the United Kingdom’s Eurovision results in recent years, amid a series of very poor finishes. In the coming months, lawmakers intend to hear from BBC representatives and music industry experts, and will also receive written submissions.

Committee chair Caroline Dinenage said the inquiry would seek to establish who decides on the British representative, what criteria are used, and whether the failures are caused by the choice of songs, the artists’ performances or other factors. In the United Kingdom, the selection is made by the BBC, sometimes in partnership with a record label or management company.

Over the past 15 years, the United Kingdom has finished in the top 15 only once. Sam Ryder came second in 2022 with “Space Man”. In 2026, Look Mum No Computer finished last with a single point. Mae Muller came second-to-last in 2023, while James Newman finished the 2021 contest without a single point.

The next edition, to be held in Burgas, Bulgaria, will mark 30 years since the United Kingdom’s last victory, achieved by Katrina and the Waves in 1997. No date has yet been set for the hearing, and the committee could subsequently issue recommendations for the BBC.
