The Trump administration announced on Thursday the allocation of 1.8 billion dollars for humanitarian aid aimed at victims of natural disasters, famine, and those in critical need. This amount adds to the 2 billion promised in December. The U.S. Ambassador to the UN, Mike Waltz, stated that this new fund is an important step, although it represents only a fraction of previous U.S. contributions.

Despite the drastic reduction in foreign aid, which has led to budget cuts and job losses in UN agencies, Waltz emphasized that the U.S. remains the largest national donor. Critics argue that these cuts have been short-term, causing suffering and affecting the global influence of the U.S. They also highlight that UN agencies need to adapt to new financial realities, while the U.N. has raised approximately 7.4 billion dollars for humanitarian aid, against a global need of 300 million people.
