Iran and Oman are negotiating an agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, but the controversial provisions raise international concerns.

The Strait of Hormuz could be reopened to maritime traffic, according to sources cited by The New York Times, which mention that Iran and Oman are close to reaching an agreement. This reopening would allow the resumption of maritime transport through an essential route, blocked in recent months due to regional tensions.

However, the negotiated agreement contains a controversial provision that would give Iran greater influence over the navigable route. Iranian officials have stated that ships entering the Persian Gulf will use a canal close to Iran and will pay a fee, which will be shared with Oman.

This situation is contested by American officials and those from other countries, who deny Iran's authority to impose fees or control access to the strait. The Strait of Hormuz has been largely closed since the beginning of the conflict, causing significant disruptions in the global economy, considering that one-fifth of the world's trade in hydrocarbons passes through this route.
