The Slovak Parliament recently adopted a controversial law regarding informants and key witnesses, provoking furious reactions from the opposition, which claims that it threatens the rule of law. The opposition accused the pro-Russian government of Prime Minister Robert Fico of attempting to weaken democratic institutions. During the vote, there were heated exchanges and even scuffles among politicians, with one deputy throwing a plastic bottle at an opponent. The European Commission expressed its concern about the legislative changes, emphasizing that they could affect EU subsidies. The government argues that the current informant agency has been used politically in the past, which is why it proposed its reorganization. Critics of the law believe that it will facilitate corruption and protect criminals, and the opposition leader referred to the parliamentary session as "the night of the mafia," accusing it of an attack on the rule of law in Slovakia.
