Approximately 4.4 million voters in Slovakia are going to the polls on Saturday to elect the presidents and councils of the country’s eight regions, as well as mayors and municipal councils in nearly 3,000 localities. The vote is considered a barometer of the public mood ahead of the next parliamentary elections.
The three-party coalition led by left-wing populist Prime Minister Robert Fico risks losing its parliamentary majority, according to Agerpres. However, polls do not indicate a clear majority for either the liberal or conservative opposition should early parliamentary elections be held.
The vote is taking place in a single day and has been described as a “super election.” In Bratislava and Kosice, the country’s largest cities, voters will also elect district mayors and district councils.
Polling stations opened at 7:00 a.m. local time, with voting scheduled to end at 8:00 p.m. The polling period could be extended in the event of technical problems. No official projections will be released, but partial results will be published throughout the night as the votes are counted.
