The Rhine, an important river in Germany, is facing a drastic drop in water levels, which could make navigation impossible in certain sections. This situation is caused by high temperatures and a lack of precipitation, and the German inland shipping association BDB warns that the water level at Kaub, a crucial reference point, will continue to decline.

Although cargo ships have managed to transport goods, they are forced to operate with reduced loads, thus increasing costs. BDB director Jens Schwanen stated that at current levels, commercial transport will be severely affected. So far, there are no navigation bans, but authorities are monitoring the situation. Large companies, such as Thyssenkrupp and BASF, have started to use vessels with reduced draft to continue shipments.

A potential halt in navigation would have a significant impact on the German economy, already affected by rising energy prices and tariffs imposed by the U.S. The government is considering support measures for affected companies.
