The trial of Nikola Selakovic, the Minister of Culture of Serbia, began in Belgrade, where he and three other defendants are accused of abuse of power and falsification of official documents related to the approval of a hotel project by Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of former American President Donald Trump.

Selakovic, who waived his ministerial immunity, claims he is innocent and does not understand the charges brought against him. The controversial project, which involved the demolition of the former headquarters of the Yugoslav army's general staff to build a luxury hotel, was suspended last year, and the accusations suggest that the status of 'protected building' was removed based on a forged document.

Kushner's firm, Affinity Partners, decided to withdraw from the project, and the trial has sparked strong reactions among the public, which is divided between supporters and opponents of President Aleksandar Vucic.
