Thousands of Albanians protested for 100 days against a luxury hotel project planned on the Adriatic coast, near a protected area. Demonstrators gathered in front of the prime minister’s office, calling for his resignation and carrying flamingos made of cardboard. The movement was called the “Flamingo Revolution,” after the birds that activists claim would be threatened by the future resort.

The controversial real estate project is estimated at 4–5 billion euros and includes a complex to be built on an uninhabited island. The initiative is associated with a company controlled by Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of U.S. President Donald Trump and Ivanka Trump’s husband.

Albanian authorities granted the project strategic investor status, allowing access to simplified procedures. The decision intensified criticism from protesters and environmental organizations, which are challenging the impact of the construction on the coastal ecosystem and protected habitats. Demonstrations took place daily for three months, without the project being withdrawn.
