Ira 'Ike' Schab, a veteran of the U.S. Navy and one of the last survivors of the Pearl Harbor attack, passed away Saturday morning at the age of 105 in Beaverton, Oregon. At the time of the attack on December 7, 1941, Schab was 21 years old and was aboard the USS Dobbin. Although he spoke rarely about that day for decades, in recent years he participated in memorial ceremonies in Hawaii, wanting to honor the memory of his fallen comrades. The Japanese attack resulted in the deaths of over 2,400 military personnel and marked the entry of the United States into World War II. After the war, Schab studied aerospace engineering and worked for General Dynamics, contributing to the Apollo program. Born on July 4, 1920, Schab followed in his father's footsteps and enlisted in the Navy at 18, and his son also became a commander in the U.S. Navy. At a ceremony in 2022, he emphasized the importance of remembering and honoring those who served.
