The President of Madagascar, Andry Rajoelina, appointed a military man, General Ruphin Fortunat Dimbisoa Zafisambo, as prime minister on Monday, in an attempt to end the protests.

One week after the government resigned in an attempt to calm a protest that engulfed this extremely poor island from the Indian Ocean, the head of state appointed a general from the Ground Forces, largely unknown to the general public, Ruphin Fortunat Dimbisoa Zafisambo.
