France’s Prime Minister, Sébastien Lecornu, will meet on Wednesday with representatives of five trade unions to discuss measures needed to guarantee the right to protest, following last week’s violent riots. The French government has announced a “massive” mobilization of security forces ahead of demonstrations scheduled for Saturday and the trade union protest on November 5.
The violence included clashes with police, looting, and the burning of public buildings and shops. Nearly 150 people were arrested, while more than 800 were brought before the courts, according to the justice minister.
Authorities have imposed nighttime travel restrictions in certain areas of Paris and banned public gatherings on the Champs-Élysées, near public buildings, and in train stations. Police have temporarily banned the transport of canisters and bottles containing gasoline or gas.
French lawmakers have decided to launch an inquiry into the riots, including possible shortcomings within intelligence services and the authorities. Lecornu accused radical far-left groups of preparing an “insurrectionary plan,” an allegation disputed by analysts and political opponents.
