An American federal judge, Randolph Moss, blocked on Tuesday the executive order of President Donald Trump aimed at stopping federal funding for public radio and television networks NPR and PBS. This order, issued on May 1, accused the two institutions of spreading "leftist propaganda with taxpayer money." The judge's decision came following an appeal made by NPR and PBS, which challenged the legality of the order, considering it a violation of the First Amendment, which protects freedom of speech. The judge emphasized that the government cannot reduce funding for media institutions because of their opinions. In response, White House Press Secretary Abigail Jackson criticized the ruling, calling it "ridiculous" and asserting that NPR and PBS do not have a right to public funding. On the other hand, NPR President Katherine Maher welcomed the decision as a "victory" for a free press. This situation reflects the growing tensions between the Trump administration and media institutions it considers hostile, with Trump using various levers to support his agenda.
