The tragedy at the Gloria funicular in Lisbon, which occurred at the beginning of September and resulted in the death of 17 people, could have been avoided, according to a preliminary report from the Bureau for the Prevention and Investigation of Air and Railway Accidents (GPIAAF). The report indicates that the cable connecting the two cabins did not meet safety standards. Following the accident, GPIAAF recommended suspending the operation of all funiculars in Lisbon until the safety systems are verified. The Gloria funicular, opened in 1885, transports approximately 3 million passengers annually, linking the city center to the Upper District, known for its nightlife.
