The indictment suggests that the accused officials collaborated with the Sinaloa cartel, particularly with the sons of Joaquín 'El Chapo' Guzmán, to facilitate drug transport into the U.S. The American ambassador to Mexico stated that corruption supporting organized crime will be investigated and punished. In the past, other Mexican officials have been accused of ties to the cartels, and Sheinbaum has stated that she has not seen evidence of the corruption allegations. Her government has already begun an action against the cartels, under pressure from the Trump administration.
