Silviu Șchiopu, the PNL mayor of the Ungra commune, was definitively sentenced by the Brașov Court of Appeal to one year and four months in prison for drug trafficking. Initially, the Brașov Tribunal had sentenced him to 2 years and 6 months, but the appellate court applied a reduction of the sentence due to mitigating circumstances.
In the same case, a co-defendant received the same reduced sentence, and two companies owned by Șchiopu were fined with reduced penalties. The mayor was arrested in 2021 for selling cannabis-based products through his company, Ungra CBD, which also operated an online store. This is not the first conviction of a mayor from Ungra, as former PSD mayor, Traian Stanciu, was sentenced in 2023 to suspended prison for offenses related to European funds.
