The Estonian authorities have announced the arrival of the first four Swedish prisoners who will serve their sentences in Estonia, transported by plane to the Amari military base, before being transferred to the prison in Tartu.

The agreement concluded between Estonia and Sweden provides for the transfer of up to 600 Swedish prisoners, with 100 planned arrivals by the end of September and a total of 200 by the end of the year. Estonia has the right to reject certain transfers, and the prisoners will not benefit from temporary release, returning to Sweden upon completion of their sentences.

This measure comes in the context of Sweden's efforts to combat violent crime, which has led to overcrowding in prisons, while Estonia has empty cells, having the lowest prison occupancy rate in the European Union.
