The first nuclear power plant in Turkey, Akkuyu, located in the Mersin province, will become operational in 2026, according to statements from the Minister of Energy. Russia has offered an additional funding of 9 billion dollars for this project, which is part of a 2010 agreement worth 20 billion dollars. The plant, with a capacity of 4,800 megawatts, was initially scheduled to become operational in 2025, but the deadline has been postponed.

The minister mentioned that Turkey is in discussions with various international companies for additional nuclear projects in the Sinop and Thrace regions. There are also discussions about developing photovoltaic parks with ACWA Power from Saudi Arabia, having a total capacity of 5,000 megawatts. Turkey's long-term plans include building nuclear capacities of over 20 gigawatts by 2050, with other plants planned on the Black Sea coast and in the Thrace region.
