Zohran Mamdani, the young socialist mayor of New York, generated controversy on his first day in office by revoking executive orders that supported the Jewish state. He repealed an order signed by former mayor Eric Adams, which prohibited city officials from boycotting Israel, as well as another order that adopted the definition of antisemitism provided by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA). The Israeli Foreign Ministry reacted, accusing Mamdani of "pouring antisemitic gasoline on an open fire." Critics such as Republican councilwoman Inna Vernikov argued that the new measures encourage pro-Hamas antisemitism. Mamdani stated that the revocation of these orders represents a "new beginning" for his administration, promising to reissue the decrees that he supports.
