Nicusor Dan met with Ronald S. Lauder in New York and reaffirmed Romania’s commitment to combating antisemitism

President of Romania Nicusor Dan met with Ronald S. Lauder, president of the World Jewish Congress, in New York, on the sidelines of his visit to the United States. The discussion took place amid the worrying rise of antisemitism internationally.

The head of state said that Romania remains a regional model in preventing and combating antisemitism and presented the measures adopted by the authorities in this area. Nicusor Dan mentioned the implementation of the second National Strategy for the Prevention and Combating of Antisemitism, Xenophobia, Radicalization and Hate Speech.

The president also underscored that Holocaust education has become compulsory in high schools and that Romania is prepared to actively participate in the new United Nations Working Group to combat antisemitism.

Nicusor Dan praised Ronald S. Lauder’s longstanding work in promoting religious freedom and preserving the memory of the Holocaust. On the occasion of Yom Kippur, the president conveyed to him and to Jewish communities around the world the traditional greeting “G’mar chatima tovah”.
