Nemo, the winner of Eurovision 2024 with the song "The Code", announced that he will return the EBU trophy in protest against Israel's participation in the contest. The Swiss artist, who identifies as non-binary, emphasized that the values of unity and inclusion promoted by Eurovision are contradicted by Israel's actions, which have been accused of serious violations of international law. In an Instagram post, Nemo explained that, although he is grateful for the experience of winning the contest, he cannot accept the trophy in the current context. He highlighted that Eurovision has been used to improve the image of a state accused of genocide, demanding that the values promoted on stage be reflected off stage as well. Thus, the artist decided to return the trophy to the EBU headquarters in Geneva, sending a strong message about the integrity of the contest's values.
