European authorities have reacted to France's concerns regarding the sale of illegal products on the Chinese platform Shein, including dolls with pedopornographic characteristics. Thomas Regnier, spokesperson for the European Commission, emphasized that the EU takes this issue seriously and will not hesitate to take action if necessary. Regnier confirmed the receipt of the letter from France and mentioned that platforms allowing the sale of illegal products violate EU legislation.
He also explained that, according to the Digital Services Act, blocking the platform would fall to the member state in which it is established, in this case, Ireland. Henna Virkkunen, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission, will discuss the situation with the French Minister of Digitalization. In April 2024, the European Commission classified Shein as a very large online platform, which allows for stricter oversight, and in February opened an investigation against it for failing to meet obligations to combat the sale of illegal products.
