The European Union is on the verge of including the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on the list of terrorist organizations, after France announced that it would support this measure. EU foreign ministers are meeting on Thursday in Brussels to approve new sanctions in response to the brutal repression of protests in Iran, which has led to thousands of deaths and arrests. Although France initially hesitated, it now, together with Italy and Germany, supports the inclusion of the IRGC on the terrorist list, thus aligning itself with the United States.

However, some member states have expressed concerns that this measure could lead to a break in diplomatic relations with Iran, affecting negotiations for the release of detained European citizens. The anti-government protests in Iran have generated a violent reaction from the authorities, prompting diplomats to call for a strong political signal from Europe. A senior EU diplomat emphasized that the activities of the IRGC justify this terrorist classification.
