The European Union has officially joined the American operation “Economic Outlaw,” launched by the United States on August 24 to limit Iran’s access to financing and the international financial system, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced Thursday.
The campaign targets individuals, companies, ships, and institutions accused of helping Tehran obtain oil revenues, evade sanctions, or procure technologies for its nuclear and missile programs. Since the operation was launched, Washington has sanctioned more than 60 entities.
According to Iranian sources cited by Reuters, the pressure has reduced oil exports from approximately 1.7 million barrels per day to 260,000 barrels. The rial has reached a record low, while inflation is approaching 70%.
The United States has also proposed withdrawing access to the U.S. banking system for five branches in the United Arab Emirates of Banque Misr, accused of facilitating Iranian transactions worth billions of dollars. Washington intends to impose new secondary sanctions weekly, including against banks supporting these operations.
