The Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has raised major concerns, with an increased risk of spread in ten African countries, said the president of Africa CDC, Jean Kaseya.
These countries include South Sudan, Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Congo, Burundi, Angola, the Central African Republic, and Zambia. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, where the epidemic is rapidly expanding, nearly 750 suspected cases and 177 deaths have been reported. The World Health Organization (WHO) has assessed the risk as being "very high" at the national level, which represents a maximum alert level. Although Ebola causes severe hemorrhagic fever, the virus is less contagious than SARS-CoV-2 or the measles virus.
In the absence of a vaccine and an approved treatment for the Bundibugyo strain, prevention measures focus on adhering to health standards and rapid detection of cases.
