Juan Santiago Gallon, a notorious Colombian drug trafficker, was killed in Mexico, according to a statement from President Gustavo Petro. Gallon is infamous for his involvement in the assassination of foundation founder Andres Escobar in 1994, an incident that severely affected Colombia's international image. Escobar was killed after scoring an own goal in the 1994 World Cup match, and Gallon and his brothers insulted him before a bodyguard shot the footballer.
Gallon was arrested in 1995 and had several legal issues, including drug trafficking. Although he was captured in 2018, he was released shortly after. In recent years, Gallon lived in Mexico.
