Julio Portillo, a Guatemalan opposition lawmaker, and three police officers were killed on Friday in a gun attack on a road in the village of Rio Hondo, Zacapa province, an important region for drug trafficking. Authorities announced on Saturday that the attack was under investigation, while President Bernardo Arévalo called for everyone involved to be identified and held accountable.

The victim was Julio Portillo, 35, a lawmaker from Zacapa and a member of the opposition National Unity for Hope party, led by former first lady Sandra Torres. According to the Interior Ministry, the police officers were shot dead as they returned fire during a direct attack on the lawmaker, carried out by unidentified individuals.

The incident comes amid heightened tensions. Zacapa province is associated with the territory of the Lorenzana family cartel, which is linked to Mexico’s Sinaloa cartel. On September 27, eight civilians were killed in clashes between rival gangs.

At the end of October, a party attended by approximately 1,000 guests was held in the region for the daughter of the mayor of Zacapa. The event was condemned by the U.S. Embassy amid the family’s links to drug traffickers wanted by U.S. authorities.
