FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono has made his first public statement after the death of Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel, which occurred in hospital several days after an incident on the pitch. Owono said that he is going through “the hardest days” of his life and that he feels immense pain following the footballer’s loss.
During the match, the 25-year-old goalkeeper came out of goal and allegedly struck 30-year-old Jesús De Miguel violently in the chest with his leg. The striker fell motionless on the pitch and was resuscitated in the ambulance. According to the Iberian press, he suffered cardiac arrest while being transported to a hospital in Tenerife, where he later died.
Spanish police have opened an investigation into involuntary manslaughter against Owono, according to information published by the Spanish press. The goalkeeper closed his Instagram account after receiving numerous insults and messages calling him a “killer.”
“I find it difficult to find the right words and to accept everything that has happened,” Owono said. He added that he is thinking of Jesús de Miguel’s family and everyone who loved him. The Iberian press reports that the goalkeeper also faces a severe sporting suspension.
