The Catacombs of Paris have been reopened to visitors after a closure of approximately six months, now being better protected and equipped with modern facilities, according to DPA.

The new technical installations, including advanced air treatment systems, contribute to better preservation of this historic site. The museum director, Isabelle Knafou, warned that although the improvements are significant, the site remains fragile. The high humidity in the corridors, around 90%, promotes the development of microorganisms that attack the bones. Additionally, the carbon dioxide and bacteria brought by up to 600,000 visitors annually affect the delicate climate inside.

The catacombs were created at the end of the 18th century, as a result of a public health crisis, when the remains of approximately 6 million people were moved from overcrowded cemeteries to abandoned limestone quarries. Since 1810, the bones have been systematically arranged to form walls, decorated with inscriptions and philosophical quotes.
