The bodies of two Belgian mountaineers who disappeared in Switzerland 34 years ago have been recently discovered, after being released by the melting of the Trift glacier, according to a statement from the Valais cantonal police. On July 26, a hiker reported finding two bodies on the glacier located in southern Switzerland, near the border with Italy.

The bodies were transported to the Forensic Medicine Institute of the Valais Hospital in Sion for identification. A comparison of DNA profiles confirmed that they belong to the two mountaineers who disappeared in the Weissmies region in 1992, at the time of their disappearance being 39 and 41 years old. The Valais police maintain a list of missing persons since 1925, and the retreat of glaciers has led to the discovery of the remains of missing persons decades later, such as the case of a mountaineer found last year in the Obergabelhorn massif.
