The A40 motorway, one of the busiest motorways in Germany, will be completely closed for 10 days for the search for unexploded ordnance from World War II.

The A40 motorway, considered the 'backbone' of the Ruhr region in Germany, will be completely closed for 10 days, starting from June 12, to allow for an operation to search for unexploded ordnance and bombs left over from World War II. The closure will affect a section near the city of Mülheim, where up to 90,000 vehicles pass daily.

Authorities warn that traffic will be diverted onto significant detour routes, and drivers are advised to adjust their travel plans. The ordnance search will involve excavating a 20-meter segment of the roadway, and the road will need to be completely rebuilt after the checks are completed.

In addition, work is underway in the Kaiserberg junction area in Duisburg, further complicating the situation. The infrastructure modernization project aims to expand the motorway to six lanes in the coming years to accommodate the high volume of traffic.
