Tensions between Washington and Brussels are rising over Greenland, a Danish autonomous territory that American President Donald Trump considers a strategic asset. Scott Bessent, the U.S. Treasury Secretary, emphasized that the U.S. will not outsource security from the Northern Hemisphere and warned the EU not to respond with trade measures. Trump has threatened tariffs on countries that oppose the acquisition of Greenland. He also linked his desire to control this territory to his failure to obtain the Nobel Peace Prize, stating that the world will not be safe until Greenland is under American control. Bessent referred to how the U.S. has previously acquired territories, suggesting that a purchase of Greenland is not out of the question.
