Helene Budliger Artieda, head of the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) in Switzerland, stated that the country should prepare for the possibility that tariffs imposed by the United States may remain in effect indefinitely. She made the comments following the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to annul the tariff program of former President Donald Trump, which affected Switzerland, among others, with the highest tariffs in Europe. Although the tariffs have been reduced, Budliger Artieda emphasized that the U.S. could use other legal bases, such as national security, to maintain the tariffs. Swiss authorities are analyzing the impact of the new global tariffs of 15% and expect that they will not significantly affect the overall level of taxes on Swiss goods. In November, Switzerland and the U.S. reached a framework agreement to avoid a major trade war, and negotiations continue to finalize it by the end of March.
