A devastating earthquake with a magnitude of 8.8 has occurred near the Kamchatka peninsula, damaging the Rîbaci nuclear submarine base. Satellite images show damage to a floating jetty, with a section of the pier detached from its mooring. The base is vital to the Russian Pacific fleet, responsible for maintaining nuclear submarines. The earthquake triggered tsunami warnings and was followed by a volcanic eruption.
