Stockholm has decided to allocate 575 million crowns (approximately 52 million euros) in the budget for 2026 to create grain reserves, which will be financed through contracts between the state and enterprises. The state will purchase grain from these enterprises, thus ensuring rotating stocks available at all times. A tender for this project will be launched on October 15 in the counties of Norrbotten, Västerbotten, Västernorrland, and Jämtland, which depend on supplies from southern Sweden for food provision. The Minister of Civil Defense, Carl-Oskar Bohlin, emphasized the strategic importance of northern Sweden in national defense, mentioning that the goal is to guarantee access to food in times of crisis. The concept of "total defense" was reactivated in Sweden in 2015 and strengthened after the invasion of Ukraine, involving the entire society in maintaining the vital functions of the country. The Swedish Agricultural Agency highlighted that between 90 and 95% of the population could survive exclusively on grain for three months without nutritional deficiencies.
