Spain has sent a frigate to Cyprus for a "protection mission"

The Spanish Ministry of Defense has announced the deployment of the frigate Cristóbal Colón to Cyprus for a protection mission, which will accompany the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle and Greek Navy ships, following a drone attack on a British military base in Akrotiri. The frigate will carry out air defense missions and will assist in the event of evacuating civilian personnel. The announcement comes amid tensions with the United States, after Spain's refusal to allow American planes to use Spanish bases in the conflict with Iran.

Defense Minister Margarita Robles stated that Spain will assess the possibility of providing military assistance to Cyprus if the European Union requests it. The incident with the drone, likely launched by Hezbollah from Lebanon, has generated strong reactions, including criticism from U.S. President Donald Trump, but Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez reaffirmed the position of not getting involved in the war.
