Slovakia will sign a cooperation agreement in the field of nuclear energy with the United States next week, according to Prime Minister Robert Fico. This agreement comes in the context of Slovakia's plans to build a new nuclear unit with the help of the American group Westinghouse. The new unit will have a capacity of nearly 1,200 megawatts (MW), exceeding the capacity of existing units. Fico emphasized that the new unit will be exclusively state-owned and will be located on the site of the current nuclear power plant in Jaslovske Bohunice.
Additionally, the Prime Minister mentioned the intention to participate in the signing of a general nuclear cooperation agreement in Washington. Slovakia currently produces 63% of its energy from Soviet technology nuclear power plants, and the new reactor is estimated to become operational in about 15 years.
