Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni will visit Modena on Sunday, canceling a scheduled meeting in Cyprus, following a serious incident in which a man drove into a crowd, injuring eight people, four of them seriously. The incident occurred on Saturday in the city center, where the suspect, a 30-year-old man of North African origin, randomly struck pedestrians. After the attack, he attempted to flee and stabbed a passerby who tried to stop him, and was later arrested by the police.
The Modena prosecutor's office is investigating the case for 'massacre' and bodily harm, establishing that the attack was deliberate. Mayor Massimo Mezzetti mentioned that the suspect had a history of mental health issues, having been diagnosed with schizoid personality disorder. Two of the injured suffered amputations, and one is in critical condition.
