An Argentine scientific mission will travel next week to Ushuaia to investigate the possible presence of hantavirus-carrying rodents, after the MV Hondius vessel was involved in an epidemic that resulted in three deaths. The director of the epidemiology department in the province of Tierra del Fuego, Juan Petrina, announced that samples will be taken from the rodents, and the results should be available in about four weeks.
In France, 26 people who had contact with passengers from the MV Hondius have tested negative for hantavirus, but they remain in strict isolation, having an incubation period of up to 42 days. Health Minister Stéphanie Rist emphasized the importance of continuous monitoring of these individuals. Currently, the risk to the general population in Europe is considered very low. Additionally, passengers from the ship, all tested negative, are heading to Australia, where they will be placed in quarantine.
