The Ruby Princess ship, which was on a 20-day cruise from San Francisco to Canada and Alaska, reported an outbreak of norovirus, affecting 102 passengers and 23 crew members, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Norovirus, highly contagious, spreads through contaminated food or contact with contaminated surfaces, being particularly dangerous for individuals with pre-existing conditions, young children, and seniors. Symptoms include vomiting and abdominal pain, which can last up to three days.

The outbreak was reported on June 12, and there were 3,032 passengers and 1,144 crew members on board the ship. Princess Cruises has implemented enhanced sanitation protocols and will thoroughly clean the ship before the next voyage.

Since the beginning of the year, the CDC has reported seven outbreaks of norovirus on cruise ships, most caused by transmission from infected individuals. Frequent handwashing is essential to prevent infection.
