Several community outbreaks of hepatitis A are active in six localities in Brașov County, where 85 cases have been reported since the beginning of the school year. Most illnesses were recorded among children aged between one and nine, while six cases come from the municipality of Brașov.
The outbreaks are ongoing in Săcele, Tărlungeni, Zizin, Arini, Apața and Prejmer, particularly in disadvantaged areas. The Brașov Public Health Directorate is monitoring the situation and has sent informational materials to schools and family doctors.
Hepatitis A, also known as the “dirty hands disease,” is transmitted through contaminated hands, food or water, as well as through direct contact with an infected person. To limit its spread, the Public Health Directorate recommends frequent handwashing, disinfecting surfaces with chlorine-based products and carrying out daily epidemiological screening in schools.
The authorities have distributed chlorine-based substances and antiseptics, while family doctors in the affected localities have received vaccines for contacts of infected people. People with symptoms are advised to consult a doctor.
