Vladimir Putin has enacted a new law through which Russia cancels debts of up to 10 million rubles (approximately 120,000 euros) for individuals who sign contracts with the military to fight in Ukraine, starting from May 1, 2026. This measure is part of the Kremlin's efforts to attract recruits for the war in Ukraine, which began in February 2022. The law provides for the cancellation of existing debts, including those of the recruits' spouses. Contracts must be signed for a minimum period of one year and involve participation in the "special military operation," a term used by the Kremlin to describe the conflict in Ukraine. The Russian economy is feeling the impact of the war's costs, and the Kremlin prioritizes the needs of the armed forces, trying to also provide social benefits to soldiers returning from the front.
