A Romanian and an Italian died in an explosion in Andria, Italy, while they were preparing a homemade bomb.

A Romanian man aged approximately 40 and an Italian man of the same age were killed in an explosion in a rural area near the city of Andria, in southern Italy. Carabinieri are investigating the possibility that the two were handling explosives to make a homemade bomb intended to blow up an ATM.

The Romanian man had lived in Italy for more than 10 years. According to preliminary information, he and his alleged Italian accomplice died when the device exploded. The Italian man had been reported missing by his family before authorities established the victims’ identities.

Investigators used fingerprints, distinguishing marks and other items found at the scene, including an earring, to identify the two men. Their identities are to be officially confirmed after autopsies at the Policlinico in Bari. Forensic medical, fingerprint and genetic examinations are also being carried out, including DNA analyses.

A Ford Kuga reported stolen was found near a villa. The property belongs to a 77-year-old man who is known to the authorities. So far, investigators have not established any connection between him and the explosion.
