In a surprising move, four Republicans signed a petition alongside Democrats, forcing a vote on the extension of tax subsidies for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) for another three years. This comes after Republican leaders in the House advanced a bill that does not address the significant increase in monthly premiums, which will affect millions of people once the subsidies expire at the end of the year. Democrats, led by Hakeem Jeffries, needed 218 signatures to force the vote. Although Mike Johnson and other influential Republicans opposed the extension of the subsidies, some moderate Republicans expressed concern about rising health care costs. Despite the discussions, the Republican party leadership chose to support the conservative wing of the party, which criticizes the subsidies. Brian Fitzpatrick, Robert Bresnahan, Ryan Mackenzie, and Mike Lawler signed the petition, reaching the necessary number of signatures. Fitzpatrick stated that Republican leaders forced this situation by rejecting proposed amendments to temporarily extend the subsidies.
