Republican Senator John Curtis on Tuesday called on the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee to open an investigation into the financing of festivities held for the wedding of Donald Trump Jr., President Donald Trump’s eldest son. Curtis is seeking a review of any financial benefits, preferential treatment or forms of access allegedly obtained by Russian businessman Umar Kremlev through his relationship with the presidential family.
Donald Trump Jr. and his wife, Bettina Trump, said last week that their friend had given them two evenings of festivities in the Bahamas, held in May. The Republican senator described the situation as different from an ordinary wedding gift and called for Donald Trump Jr. to be summoned to appear before Congress.
Donald Trump said his son had reimbursed the expenses, but the clarification did not end the controversy. Democratic Senator Dick Durbin, the top Democrat on the Judiciary Committee, supports the investigation and says alleged corruption at the highest levels of government must not be tolerated.
In the same letter, Curtis called for the resumption of a congressional investigation into Hunter Biden’s business dealings. The move comes amid growing tensions among Republicans, including over the Epstein case and the war in Iran.
