The South African President Cyril Ramaphosa stated that the decision of American President Donald Trump to boycott the G20 summit in Johannesburg is a 'loss' for the USA. Tensions between the two countries have risen due to unfounded accusations from the USA regarding the persecution of the white Afrikaner minority and the demand for accountability from Israel for the genocide in Gaza. Ramaphosa emphasized that boycott policies do not work and reaffirmed South Africa's commitment to continue the case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), despite the ceasefire in Gaza.
He also mentioned that the G20 summit will take place regardless of the absence of the USA, which thus loses an important role on the international stage. Relations between the USA and South Africa are at their lowest level since the end of apartheid in 1994, and Trump's comments have been regarded by the South African government as a result of disinformation.
