In the conservative province of Aceh in Indonesia, a man and a woman were sentenced by an Islamic court for extramarital sexual relations and each received 100 lashes. The flogging took place on Tuesday in a public park in Banda Aceh, in front of dozens of spectators. Four other individuals were also publicly flogged, receiving between eight and 29 lashes for offenses such as physical contact with members of the opposite sex or consuming alcohol. A woman who received 27 lashes fainted and required medical attention.
Rajesh Kana, a local prosecutor's official, stated that Islamic law is strictly enforced in Aceh, and penalties are imposed for violations. Sexual relations between unmarried individuals are prohibited in this province, which is the only one in Indonesia that applies Sharia law. Indonesia has also banned extramarital sex through a new penal code, which will come into effect in 2026. This punishment aligns with the severe trends of enforcing Islamic law in Aceh, where public floggings have become a common practice.
