Pope Leo XIV made a symbolic visit to the Blue Mosque in Istanbul, thus becoming the fourth pope to enter a mosque. Although it was initially expected that the Pope would have a moment of prayer, he declined this invitation, explaining that he only wished to visit the mosque. Accompanied by the muezzin Askin Musa Tunca and the president of the Directorate for Religious Affairs, the Pope spent 20 minutes admiring the place of worship, listening to the muezzin's explanations.
The Vatican stated that the Pope experienced the mosque with respect and contemplation. The Blue Mosque, an emblematic monument of Istanbul, has recently been renovated and is known for its architectural beauty. Despite the visit, Pope Leo XIV did not include Hagia Sophia in his itinerary, a decision that generated controversy. This visit is part of a broader journey in Turkey, which will continue with a visit to Lebanon.
