Pope Leo calls for the development of artificial intelligence systems that support peace and reduce social divisions

Pope Leo on Monday called for the development of artificial intelligence systems that contribute to peace and do not fuel divisions or conflicts, during the AI4Peace conference held in Rome. The pontiff’s message was conveyed to participants by Father Andrea Ciucci, chancellor of the Vatican’s Pontifical Academy for Life.

In a world marked by wars and tensions, the pope argued that AI development must be guided by wisdom and charity. He advocated technologies that respect the dignity of every person and strengthen ties between people, rather than pushing humanity toward endless conflict.

Artificial intelligence is one of the central themes of his pontificate, which began 16 months ago. Pope Leo, the first pontiff born in the United States, publicly addressed the risks of AI just days after his election.

In his first major document, published in May, he warned that these systems can spread disinformation and fuel conflicts. The pontiff also called for the adoption of international rules for the AI sector. The conference at the Pontifical Lateran University was attended, among others, by economist Jeffrey Sachs and Francisco Rojas Aravena, rector of the United Nations University for Peace.
